Arsenal opted against signing N'Golo Kante from Leicester City in 2016 after the midfielder's agents demanded fees the club felt were exorbitant.
Kante was one of the most in-demand players in world football at the time after playing an integral part in the Foxes' improbable Premier League title win under Claudio Ranieri.
His relatively £32m release clause made him a top target for most elite European sides and, according to a report from the Athletic, the Gunners came close to securing his signature.
The club were keen to strengthen their midfield and, according to their former chief transfer negotiator Dick Law, then manager Arsene Wenger had been monitoring Kante since his time in Ligue 2 with Caen.
