Ukraine intensifies. Declaring that the collective is "officially in cyber war against the Russian government", Anonymous took down the website of Russia Today, the country's main state broadcaster, early this morning.

They also targeted the websites of the Russian government, the Kremlin, and the Russian defence ministry.Russia Today (RT.com) confirmed that the attack took place and took some websites down for 'extended periods of time'.Anonymous used a sophisticated cyber attack known as 'distributed denial-of-service' (DDoS).

This involves flooding a site with hundreds of computer systems so that the website is overwhelmed and nobody else can access it.Founded in 2003 as a digital protest group opposed to the Church of Scientology, Anonymous is a decentralised collective without leaders that often uses hacking techniques to target groups that violate human rights.While the DDoS attack is little more than an inconvenience, Anonymous' attacks on Russian computer systems is likely to intensify in the coming days.

On February 15, an Anonymous video said it would take Russia's industrial control systems 'hostage' if Russia invaded the Ukraine.
