I last met Andy Street in 2018, when he was a year into the job. At the time, he was riding high: his election in 2017, by the narrowest of margins – just 3,776 votes – was not just a personal victory, but a bellwether for rising Tory fortunes in a region that for years had been a Labour heartland.
Then, he was waxing lyrical about his plans for growth and development in the region. But since then we’ve had the pandemic, during which the Government’s handling of the crisis has come into serious question and areas like Street’s have suffered some major setbacks.Not only that, but Covid has exacted a particularly painful, personal toll on Street himself.
