Aidan O'Brien has apologised after a mix-up with his runners in the bet365 Fillies' Mile. It had been thought 50/1 chance Snowfall had finished third, when it was her stablemate Mother Earth.
Both horses were carrying the wrong number cloths and jockeys, which should have been the other way round. The real Snowfall was eighth in the contest won by the Joseph O'Brien-trained Pretty Gorgeous.
The trainer told the Racing Post: "I don't know what to say other than I am so sorry that it happened." Mother Earth will now face disqualification and O'Brien can expect a large fine.
Betfair and Sky Bet were among the firms paying out on both horses each-way as a goodwill gesture. The mistake was highlighted by a racing fan on social media.
