AI, or 'artificial general intelligence', following a major advancement by Google's DeepMind AI team.DeepMind's new Gato system is one of the first ever multitasking artificial intelligences of its kind.
This means it can apply itself to many different tasks using the same network, including play Atari videogames, stack blocks with a robot arm, chat to people, press buttons, and many other things. Now, DeepMind's Research Director Nando de Freitas has said all that's needed is 'scale' to take Gato to the next level of intelligence and become indistinguishable from a human.
While most AI systems are very sophisticated at certain tasks, such as facial recognition or even navigating roads (as with Elon Musk's Tesla vehicles), they lack the 'general' intelligence that makes humans so smart.
For example, we humans are able to use our knowledge of past situations and our instincts to respond effectively to completely new scenarios.
