Zoo boss warns of 'mass cull' of animals if lack of funding continues

A struggling zoo has warned it may have to carry out a mass cull of its animals after months closed due to the coronavirus.

Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire is bleeding money may have to take the drastic action if its funding shortfall continues, managers have warned.

The zoo's chief executive Dr Sharon Redrobe gave the stark warning at a panel of the all-party parliamentary group for zoos and aquariums.

The attraction is struggling to meet its £650,000-a-month costs amid the pandemic despite reopening at the start of June. Bosses have pleaded for government funds to keep it open, Leicestershire Live reports.
