Work is set to begin on a £6.4 million supermarket in Castle Douglas. Aldi was granted planning permission in January to develop a site at Oakwell Road.

And The News understands work will begin in November, should a bid to discharge planning conditions be completed. The German firm had hoped to have the shop – on the site of the former garden centre – open by the middle of next year.

However, the aim is now to have it up and running by Christmas 2024, creating as many as 35 jobs. The News also understands the firm remains “fully committed” to the Oakwell Road site.

There had been speculation that the demise of the Wilko would see Aldi switch their attention to the hardware chain’s store in the town.
