A woman was killed this afternoon after a car exploded into flames in a "tragic incident". Police and firefighters have launched a joint investigation after a female driver's body was found inside the charred wreckage of a burning vehicle.
Multiple shocked witnesses called 999 to report the car engulfed in flames just before 1.45pm on the High Street in the village of Willington, south west of Durham.
Firefighters put out the flames but said "on arrival, it was clear the car was well alight" and sadly the woman died at the scene.
