The 33-year-old hasn't been named by police. Greater Manchester Police said her family were 'understandably distressed and devastated' after the tragedy on the M66 near Bury on Saturday.
A 31-year-old man who was also in the car involved was seriously injured. He remained in hospital on Sunday, the force said.
The collision led to the closure of a northbound stretch of the M66 between junction 4, at Simister Island, and junction 3, near Pilsworth, for several hours.
