Winter Olympics reporter was forcibly dragged off screen by a Chinese security official while broadcasting live from Beijing.Journalist Sjoerd den Daas was covering the games for Dutch broadcaster NOS outside the Bird’s Nest Stadium for the opening ceremony when he was manhandled by a man wearing a red armband. The individual entered the frame and grabbed the journalist, who pleaded by saying: “Please wait a while, I’m doing a live now.”Mr den Daas attempted to continue but was pulled away and told: “Go, this place does not allow you to stay,” before telling his fellow reporter in Dutch “We were also sent away from another spot just before.”The TV station took to Twitter on Friday to announce the reporter was “fine” following the incident, before slamming China’s treatment of journalists. They wrote on their official account: “Our correspondent @Sjoerddendaas was pulled away from the camera by security guards at 12:00 pm live in the NOS Journaal.“Unfortunately, this is increasingly becoming a daily reality for journalists in China.“He is fine and was able to finish his story a few minutes later.”Foreign media covering the games in China are understood to be heavily restricted, with mandatory use of a health-monitoring app and daily PCR tests being implemented. The security guard in question has since been identified as a ‘Public Security Volunteer’, a citizen-led neighbourhood watch helping the police keep order. That has led the IOC to come out and explain that it was an “unfortunate” isolated incident.Do you think there will be further instances of journalists facing trouble in China?
