To her subjects she was Queen Elizabeth, Her Majesty or Ma'am. But to her family Her Majesty had rather less formal titles, from ‘Lilibet’, which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex named their daughter in her honour, to 'cabbage', 'sausage', and 'Gan Gan'.
Prince William, now heir apparent, had his own rather amusing nickname for his grandmother, having anointed her as 'Gary' during his younger years.
According to reports, the name arose when a young William was playing at Buckingham Palace, but fell over and called out for help.
Instead of shouting for ‘Granny’, he called for ‘Gary’- much to the confusion of everyone present.The Daily Mail once wrote: “A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household. ‘I’m Gary,’ responded the Queen. ‘He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet'." Prince William also has his own strange nicknames given to him by his family, including his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales .
