Storms tend to be named through a joint decision made by the Met Office and Met Eireann (Ireland's equivalent of the Met Office).They're typically set in advance for a year, and there's a lot more to it than just simply naming an adverse weather event after a dead pet or their mate's nan.Naming storms helps the Met Office provide better information about a weather event through the media and government partners.This in turn helps the public have a better idea of what is in store, allowing them to prepare and plan.The Met Office hopes that naming big storms will make people more aware of them and how dangerous they can.
