mulching, admittedly, but chucking a load of organic matter on your beds between October and December, before the ground gets too cold, is a smug-inducing job your spring plants will thank you for.You can mulch either before or after planting bulbs (tulips will certainly go in later), but spending a bright afternoon chucking in all those you’ve shrewdly pre-ordered – or snapped up for a steal in the supermarket – is an autumnal must.
Prepare to plant irises, alliums, narcissi and fritillaries in the beds, along with tulips, but you will inevitably ram a few leftovers into pots, too.Speaking of pots, they are a guaranteed way to ensure detail when the garden starts to decline.
