Alopecia UK, a charity for those dealing with the condition, “We have a bias towards thinking that hair loss is worse for a woman, but many men speak frequently about not having as much support as women,” she says. “Some epidemiology studies in 2018 indicated that it’s slightly more common in women than in men,” she acknowledges, “and in one study, research showed 66% of participants with alopecia areata presented with psychiatric comorbidity comprising of issues such as generalised anxiety disorders and depressive episodes.

There is enough scientific research now to show that the psychological burden of hair loss, on women in particular, is significant and does impact on quality of life.

Schilling’s own hair loss began when she was in primary school; finally culminating in complete hair loss - alopecia universalis - in her forties.

Although statistics on how it affects younger people are not readily available, it’s common enough to indicate that hair loss is not just a matter of advancing age or changing hormones.
