Coronavirus infections in the US have leapt up by 45,242 in a single day - the largest 24-hour increase of the whole pandemic.
The worrying surge brings the total number of Americans who have tested positive for the deadly bug to more than 2.48 million, according to Reuters.
Several states have rowed back from lifting lockdown measures amid the steep rise. In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott has ordered bars to close and restaurants to limit indoor seating capacity to 50%.
