Thundery downpours and plummeting temperatures will see Britain's start to the summer take an unexpected turn following 28C highs.
Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said thick cloud and persistent rain in northern Scotland today will serve as a preview of what's to come across much of the rest of the country.
Tuesday had been billed as potentially the hottest day of the year so far at 29C, but forecasters appear to be in agreement that somewhere around the 27C mark is now more likely.
And with weather fronts making in-roads and high pressure moving out west and east, "a much cooler northerly air flow" will be arriving on Wednesday, said Mr McGivern.
