UK pubs could be turned into Bavarian-style bierkellers to comply with social-distancing rules post-lockdown. Under the plans, bar stools would be replaced with trestle tables and benches and pint glasses scrapped in favour of two-pint steins.

The possible move from cosy boozer to German drinking hall comes amid warning 40% of British pubs face closure due to coronavirus.

The British Beer and Pub Association said it was confident “German-style” settings would work for some UK pubs. They would comply with social-distancing rules by keeping customers away from the traditional bar area.
