This is the vile moment a thug repeatedly coughs into the face of a police officer as he is arrested. Footage from the officer's body-worn camera has been released as Greater Manchester Police said figures revealed there have been a staggering 170 reported assaults on emergency services workers since the Covid-19 lockdown began.

Leon Whalley, the man in the footage, is now starting a prison sentence. The 34-year-old, from Rowsley Road, Stretford, Trafford, pleaded guilty on April 30 to two counts of assault; and one count of assault of an emergency services worker.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court, he was jailed for 20 weeks. Police had been called to an incident on March 31 and Whalley was arrested.
