a 2019 study by Ergobaby, first-time parents spend a whopping £1,000 on baby clothes in the first year, yet with kids outgrowing clothing sizes at a rate of knots, many of those pieces end up barely being touched.

Environmental charity Hubbub estimates that 183 million unworn items of baby and children’s clothing are currently hanging in wardrobes across the UK.I don’t know any parents who relish the idea of using up precious storage space on too-small clothes – especially considering all the other gear that takes over your home when you have a child.

There’s the cost aspect too; spending money on something that is only going to be used a handful of times doesn’t make financial sense, particularly during a time when pricey buggies, high chairs, cots, etc are having to be bought.

Perhaps most pressing though is the waste of it all. The detrimental environmental impact of clothes going to landfill is an inescapable fact.
