This much-maligned era was a time when some of my favourite fashion items were born; the pull-on-and-go jumpsuit, the wafty kaftan and the khaki utility jacket, to name but a few.In a mood similar to the current zeitgeist, mainstream fashion was rejected for second-hand clothes, military garb and DIY-style.
Hippies, punks and disco-lovers existed side by side. I was a bit young to join any of these tribes but there’s a photo of me, aged about 10 or 11, at a Christmas party wearing a teal green tank over my favourite cherry print blouse with a long, red polka dot maxi skirt.
