Over the last few years, the check has enjoyed something of a revival: Chanel has created tailored tartan jumpsuits, Gucci has made tartan trousers, Alexander Wang has paired the material with denim and Shrimps has made a series of tartan and faux-fur-trimmed coats.
Princess Anne – who is the patron of Scottish rugby – was no doubt thinking of the symbolism when she opted for this particular colour and print, but she also (perhaps unwittingly) looks very on trend, and rather bold.
According to the Telegraph’s Head of Fashion, Lisa Armstrong, “tartan has many excellent qualities, not least that it’s one of those uncompromising, geometric patterns that never looks twee, even when it’s in the most toothachingly cutesy contexts.”Given the check’s slightly rebellious history, anything tartan also remains slightly edgy, ensuring the layering possibilities are endless, as there is little chance of looking matronly or old-fashioned.
