The traditional men’s suit has been removed from the ONS’s annual “basket of goods” that it uses to calculate the annual inflation rate – apparently because it’s the latest casualty of the increase in working from home since the start of the pandemic two years ago.Along with doughnuts and coal, the suit has been instantly banished.

It has literally vanished. The ONS said the change in working patterns meant the suit – ever-present in the basket since its inception in 1947 – was no longer one of more than 700 representative goods and services selected to measure the UK’s cost of living.Which proves they simply don’t know what they’re talking about. In an announcement detailing this year’s changes, the ONS said a new men’s formal jacket or blazer item was being introduced to ensure men’s formal and business wear was still represented in the selection, which to my eyes simply semaphores the fact that they know they were wrong to make the announcement in the first place.Of course, many of us have spent the past two years in a disrupted state, not knowing if we were ever going to go back to an office, and indeed not knowing what that office might look like even if we did.

But that is no excuse for dressing like a student. Reports like this only encourage British men to slip down the evolutionary pole, which is not a good look for any of us.The other problem is that this new casual way of dressing has meant that we are starting to wear the same clothes when we go out as when we are at home “working” on our computers.

Which at this time of year is a complete nightmare. The problem with British men is that most of them still have no idea how to dress in the summer, principally because the only time they experience heat is when.
