Milan’s spring/summer catwalks were by and large elegant, ultra grown up and strangely reassuring. Fashion wise, things are looking up.
From tailoring to soft-smart pieces of denim (at Bottega Veneta) and soothing flannel shirts that can be slotted into your working wardrobe as easily as into your weekend rota, from crisp shirting to wearable footwear (kitten heels are back everywhere, but flat forms and Mary Janes are plentiful too), from wide, waist-accentuating, Katharine Hepburn-esque trousers, to fluttery, semi fitted dresses, oh what a time to be an adult looking for a few indulgent sartorial treats, even if it means breaking what’s left of the bank. You don’t even have to wait until next year to try this out.
The camel spectrum is an excellent year-rounder and already making inroads this winter on Instagram and in the windows of Zara among other high street favourites.
The fact that it’s more pervasive on the catwalks than ever for spring suggests it’s here for some time. Most of the clothes in Milan last week are based on tried and tested templates that have worked for decades – no one ever said Italian fashion was groundbreaking.
