The Mirror is backing international calls for a ban on landmines and a clean-up of tens of millions anti-personnel devices. Up to 20 people a day lose limbs or are killed by mines and improvised explosive devices littering current and former war zones.
We are backing the International Campaign To Ban Landmines, which also demands commitment to help victims. Our recent reports on the NGO’s operation to clean up Islamic State mines in Syria shone a light on the threat.
Since 1992, the campaign has joined non-government organisations in promoting a mine-free world. Britain is one of 164 signatories to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, which also backs clearance programmes and calls for organisations to admit where they are laid.
