But on Monday the SPFL released a statement claiming that there was insufficient support for the new proposals and that the existing structure will be in place next season.

Partick Thistle have pleaded with the rest of Scottish football to consider the damage they would wreak on relegated clubs should reconstruction fail. The Maryhill side have been dropped to League 1 despite being only one point adrift in the Championship and having a game in hand due to the points per game system used to decide the standings.

Neil Doncaster has hinted that the idea of colt teams in the lower leagues could be put back on the table in future. Clubs are locked in reconstruction talks after the 2019-20 season was brought to a premature halt with Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer relegated.

SPFL have asked clubs to declare their stance on a permanent 14-10-10 league reconstruction that would finally provide salvation to relegated clubs. The governing body has written to all 42 senior sides to canvass opinion on the latest potential revamp and clubs have been asked to indicate their position by Monday June 15.Hearts owner Ann Budge 's solution of temporary change did not acquire enough support to move it forward but the SPFL have indicated there may be greater appetite for a more long-term option.
