in Kingston on their tour of the Caribbean to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.Everything Kate was wearing that evening with her bespoke version of Jenny Packham’s glitter tulle “Wonder” gown served as a semaphore for her role as the Queen’s representative on this tour. Her diamond and emerald earrings and bracelet were on loan from Her Majesty, and that in itself is interesting as Kate is the only other member of the Royal family other than the Queen to wear them.

They form part of the Emerald Tassel Parure Collection, which also includes a necklace and at least one ring.Kate wearing them isn’t necessarily an indication of favouritism or even fondness, explains writer and historian Lauren Kiehna, of The Court Jeweller blog. “Loans like this one shouldn’t be seen in terms of grandmotherly sentiment, but instead as a sign of institutional trust,” she says. “The Queen trusts the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to represent the Monarchy abroad, and jewellery loans like this one are part of that trust, given to help Kate wear the appropriate ‘uniform’ for the occasion.

The Queen has also lent important jewels to other royals representing her on tours and visits, including the Countess of Wessex.”The provenance of this particular set is unknown, although several royal jewellery experts believe that it was a gift to the Queen from the United Arab Emirates, because she was first seen in it in 1989 at a dinner during Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s visit to the United Kingdom, and she typically wears jewellery gifted to her by a country when they return.
