She told People magazine about the "bizarre and awful" feeling of being cancelled: "I feel like I lost my voice creatively.

Ethan Shanfeld Before Paul McCartney even took his seat, he was greeted with rapturous applause and an instant standing ovation at Tribeca Festival. And, in case anyone still doubted whether he still got it, he asked the crowd politely, “I’d like to hear all the girls do a Beatles scream, please,” resulting in a shriek so loud it sent shockwaves back to 1964. McCartney joined Conan O’Brien at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center Thursday evening to promote his new book, a collection of unearthed photographs titled “1964: Eyes of the Storm.” Between 1963 and 1964, McCartney took 275 photos on a 35mm camera, documenting the Beatles’ incredible rise in Europe and first visit to America, including their historic performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” McCartney thought he lost the photos, he told the audience, until a photo archivist in London recovered them in 2020. Of course, the “storm” referenced in the title of the book is Beatlemania, with a young McCartney pointing his lens out from the center of it.

BreAnna Bell Rudy Valdez has entered into an overall unscripted deal with Imagine Documentaries, Variety has learned. Under the agreement, Valdez will develop, direct and executive produce new nonfiction projects for the studio through his Bluff Road Films banner. The two time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker started his career as a camera operator on the Peabody Award-winning, Sundance series “Brick City” and went on to direct his passion project on HBO’s “The Sentence.” Shot and directed by Valdez over the course of a decade, this feature documentary tells the very personal story of his sister’s plight in the criminal justice system, while tackling subjects like mandatory minimums and sentencing reform.

Horan delivers stripped-back renditions of songs like “You Should Start a Cult,” “On a Night Like Tonight,” and more from his new album, “The Show.” In the muli-song series, fans can expect to see and hear about Horan’s creative process and reflections on his latest album cycle. “Performing live is my favorite thing to do,” shared Horan. “To bring the songs I’ve spent so much time with, seen through from start to finish is an amazing feeling. Shooting these performances with Vevo was a really special experience. I was able to go back to the place where I made the music, an area of California I adore and have spent a lot of time in over my career. To have these big songs played in an intimate setting is beautiful to me.”

Selome Hailu Hulu and the If/Then Shorts program have set a cohort for the second class of their short documentary lab, which focuses on production and career training for nonfiction filmmakers elevating LGBTQ stories. If/Then Shorts is an initiative from Field of Vision that amplifies regional, community-centered stories and supports nonfiction filmmakers through a combination of project grants, mentorship, industry consultations, editorial feedback, filmmaker advocacy and multiplatform distribution support. Since 2017, the program has supported more than 90 short documentary projects. Three film teams have been awarded $30,000 in production funding as well as the opportunity for six months of individual mentorship through a production intensive led by If/Then and Hulu. The teams will work towards premiering their shorts in September 2023 at an in-person screening event and reception at Outfest in Los Angeles. Upon completion of the films’ final cuts, Hulu will have an opportunity to review the work for acquisition and/or further development.

Todd Gilchrist editor “For Khadija” is billed as a documentary about French Montana, but there’s a reason that it’s named not after the hip-hop alter ego of Moroccan expatriate Karim Kharbouch, but his mother. “I felt like my mother’s story, the beginning to the end, the closure of her going back to Morocco, is when I was like, okay, now the story has a meaning,” French tells Variety. “This goes out to all the mothers that struggle, that have kids, that was forced to sacrifice.” Given the other films made about rappers and their families — including “Dear Mama,” about Afeni and Tupac Shakur and “Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell,” which heavily features Notorious B.I.G.’s mother Violetta Wallace — it’s not necessarily an unexpected place to start. But the documentary, which premieres June 16 at the Tribeca film Festival, uses the relationship between Karim and Khadija to highlight the unpredictable path that led a scrappy Moroccan child to become a worldwide rap star, while charting the financial struggles and familial strife that threatened to derail his meteoric rise.
