Police confirmed to the Manchester Evening News the incident was being linked to an earlier 'altercation' at the same location involving a group of people.
No injuries were reported in either incident. Greater Manchester Police said no arrests have been made as yet and investigations were continuing.
Police said officers were called to 'reports of a firearms discharge' at 7.20pm on Friday at the junction of Great Western Street and Ossory Street.
