extortion scams- with three incidents reported in a week in Tayside alone. Blackmailers will lure people into sending them intimate pictures of videos of themselves in online chats before demanding money not to release them publicly.
Tayside police said they have seen a spike in reports with three in the last week. The force has issued safety advice for people not to be caught out.A statement issued said that the scammers are often located in a different country.It reads: "Typically, blackmailers lure victims into online video sex chats which are recorded, then money is demanded accompanied by threats to publish images or video if payment is not made."The offenders are usually in a different country, but target victims by 'friending' them.
