Scientists believe they have finally discovered how life on Earth began, tracing it back to the Milky Way crashing into a dwarf galaxy.
According to a new research, five billion years ago the birth of the Sun and our planet began due to a close encounter with a neighbouring city of stars called Sagittarius.
A chain of events were triggered by ripples caused by the cosmic collision, which in turn led to the Solar System. For centuries, its formation has been the topic of great discourse among astronomers.
The finding is based on observations by the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite launched in December 2013 to create a 3D map of the Milky Way.
