NASA is keeping track of a gigantic mile-wide asteroid set to fly past Earth today. The agency has listed 1997 BQ on its near-Earth objects (NEOs) page due to hurtle past on May 21 at 9.45pm UT time.
It measures up to an astonishing 1.5km, which is almost one mile. Luckily, it stands an extremely low chance of coming into contact with planet Earth, with the rock set to fly by an estimated 3,825,631 miles away.
But in space terms NASA considered it an NEO and it is listed on its "close approaches" page. It is also currently the largest asteroid listed on its NEOs page.
But the agency has moved to assure people it stands close to no chance of hitting the planet despite the language used on its website.
