An image of a super-rare doughnut-shaped galaxy dubbed a "cosmic ring of fire" has been captured by astronomers for the first time.
Australia’s ARC Centre for Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions spotted the the galaxy on Monday night. Dubbing it RR519, the galaxy is believed to be 11billion light-years from the Solar System and is two billion times longer than the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
It is said to be a "collisional ring galaxy," making it the first one ever located, and makes stars at 50 times the rate of the Milky Way.
The discovery will change current theories on how universe structures form in early stages. Dr Tiantian Yuan used images recorded by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and spectroscopic data
