The UK will only start to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic by Easter, one of the scientific advisers to the Government has said.
Professor John Edmunds, an expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, predicted it would take months to get the "nightmare" of the epidemic under control.
The SAGE expert said the national lockdown in England "probably will work" in reducing coronavirus cases but restrictions would still be needed afterwards.
He warned a return to Boris Johnson's tiered system was "not very sensible" as he cast doubt on the effectiveness of restrictions in Tier 1 and 2 areas.
