jail sentence after a retired teacher was trampled to death on a public footpath that crossed through his field of cows.Christopher Paul Sharpe was handed a 12-week sentence, suspended for a year, after his cattle trampled 82-year-old David Tinniswood, MBE.The farmer was found guilty at Leeds Magistrate Court for failing to protect David and his wife Carol from cattle in a field where the public had a right of way.An earlier inquest heard David had gone on a short walk with his wife and their two dogs, and could only see a "faded" sign warning about a bull, but couldn't see any cattle so continued down the footpath.Carol told the inquest how a group of 20 cattle had then approached them, describing how she was pushed to the ground and saw her husband launched airborne and tossed over her head. The cows relented after ten minutes of attacking the couple and their two dogs, Rusty and Bracken, when a passing driver drove his car towards the cows.David was pronounced dead at the scene, suffering major abdominal trauma, while the older of the two dogs, Rusty, also died.In a statement for the inquest, Carol said the presence of a bull "did not worry" the couple, but said if they had seen a warning about cows with calves, they would not have entered the field. The couple were experienced walkers, and Mr Tinniswood had been an outward-bound instructor during his teaching career, as well as a member of the Ramblers Association with his wife.Farmer Sharpe received a fine of £878, was ordered to pay £7,820.30 in court costs, and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for one year.Speaking after the hearing, health and safety executive inspector Julian Franklin said: "A number of measures could have been taken to safeguard.
