Philippe Clement will work harder than ever to get the furious fans who jeered his team off the Rangers bus back onboard, according to his former No2.Johan van Rumst spent six years as the big Belgian’s sidekick at Waasland-Beveren, Genk, Club Brugge and Monaco.
Few know the Gers boss better than the 46-year-old, who was only prevented from joining Clement’s backroom team at Ibrox because of family circumstances.Without his old pal, Clement has enjoyed a rollercoaster reign in Scotland, with the high of last December’s League Cup triumph followed by the low of last year’s failed title bid and this year’s early Champions League exit.
Clement was then faced with angry scenes outside Ibrox last Sunday as his team trudged back to Govan following their 3-0 derby defeat in the season’s opening Old Firm clash.But van Rumst insists the Rangers gaffer will not shy away from the fight as he bids to transform the Ibrox men back into title contenders.
Quizzed on that confrontation with seething supporters as his team stepped off the team bus, van Rumst told Record Sport: “For sure he can handle that.“I saw him many times face that kind of thing in Brugge.
