PFA report 'spike' in calls from players seeking mental health support amid coronavirus crisis

The PFA have reported a spike in calls from players seeking mental health support amid the coronavirus crisis. A total of 299 players have already enquired about support from the players union in the first quarter of this year.

That is compared with 653 who had contacted them in the whole of 2019. Key concerns include financial issues, as a number of player face pay cuts and contract uncertainty, particularly in the lower divisions.

An increase in gambling is also a concern due to the number of players current isolated with little to occupy themselves given the lack of training and matches, while others have been caught up in panic-buying.
