Alliss was known as 'The Voice of Golf' and was synonymous with the sport in the UK, with his unique and chirpy presenting style.
He was a fine golfer in his own right before turning to commentary, winning 31 tournaments and playing in eight Ryder Cups before retiring in the 1970s.
Alongside his son Percy, he was part of the first-ever father-son duo at the Ryder Cup.But despite his success on the course, few can argue that Alliss was most at home with the microphone in his hand.
