The research firm projects $16.2 billion in incremental revenue across 14 APAC markets between 2024 and 2029. While online video is expected to generate $24.1 billion in new revenue, traditional TV will see an $8 billion decline during this period.

The report, “The Future of Japan’s Video Industry,” forecasts the online video sector to expand at a 7% compound annual growth rate over the next five years. Total screen industry revenue, encompassing free TV, pay-TV and theatrical releases, is expected to climb from $31.8 billion in 2024 to $34.1 billion by 2029.

The firm’s “Online Video in Korea” report shows that Disney+ was the fastest growing platform in the period studied, propelled by its hit Korean-produced series “Moving.” The company now has some two million subscribers in the country, though it still trails market leaders Netflix and Tving.

Taiwan saw significant premium VOD subscriber and engagement growth in the third quarter of 2023, adding 315,000 net new SVOD subs to reach a total of 5.8 million subscriptions, according to a report by Media Partners Asia.

The content investment spending figure represents a 15% hike. But the same analysis sees growth slowing and costs accelerating. The latest report from Media Partners Asia, “SEA Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics” shows 48.4 million paid online video subscriptions at the end of 2022 in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The full year saw 11.8 million net new customers, with 7.3 million of that total coming in the second half, including 4.6 million in the fourth quarter. Indonesia accounted for half of the increase.

Creating locally authentic content has been key to Netflix’s success in producing shows in Asia that have resonated globally, according to Minyoung Kim, Netflix Vice President of Content, APAC ex India, speaking at APOS, which is taking place virtually and in-person in Singapore this week (September 27-29).
