Daft Punk have released a new video series titled ‘Memory Tapes’ that reflects on the creation of their final LP ‘Random Access Memories’.The series is made up of eight episodes that offer an inside look at the creation of the album as well as highlights from the various collaborators who were featured on the LP. The collaborators share their favourite memories and the impact both Daft Punk and the album have had on their music and careers.The first two episodes of Memory Tapes feature The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas who collaborated with the French duo on ‘Instant Crush’ and pianist Chilly Gonzales who played on ‘Within’ and ‘Give Life Back To Music’.Upcoming episodes will include contributions from Pharrell Williams, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Nile Rodgers and others.The interviews were conducted at Henson Studios in Los Angeles and Gang Studios in Paris which are two of the five spaces in which ‘Random Access Memories’ was recorded.

At the time of its release, the supernova of cool around Daft Punk was so pervasive — and the hits from the album, particularly “Get Lucky,” were so ubiquitous — that it topped album charts all over the world, won four Grammys (including album of the year and best-engineered album) and got a whopping 8.8 score from Pitchfork, a publication that played no small role in the duo’s rise. Yet it was a drastic about-face for the pioneering duo, whose electronic and dance music of the previous 15-odd years had spawned countless influences and whose world-shaking 2006-7 tour basically spawned EDM. Fans expecting another electronic masterpiece instead they got a deliberately retro album that intentionally used the technology and recording techniques of the ‘70s and ‘80s to evoke the pristine, perfectionist grooves of Michael Jackson, Chic, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and others — and even unfurled a yacht-rock flag on “Fragments of Time.” It has orchestras, choirs and a battery of top-notch musicians including pioneering funk guitarist Nile Rodgers, virtuoso bassist Nathan East, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and powerhouse drummer Omar Hakim. Its Korean title is a spin on LE SSERAFIM’s official fan club name ‘FEARNOT’ or ‘피어나’ in Korean (meaning ‘Bloom’), and translates to ‘Until It Blooms’.The teaser clip features art by South Korean animator and artist Ramdaram, and pictures a young girl admiring an idol through her phone screen.

Daft Punk have announced a 10th anniversary expanded edition of their final album ‘Random Access Memories’.The reissue features 35 minutes of outtakes and unheard demos across nine tracks. Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Tim Rice will be the 2023 recipient of the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award at the 52nd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner slated for Thursday, June 15, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.   The Johnny Mercer Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Songwriters Hall of Fame and is reserved for a songwriter or songwriting team who has already been inducted in a prior year and whose body of work is of such high quality and impact that it upholds the gold standard set by the legendary Johnny Mercer. Tim Rice was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999.
