NME following the city’s inaugural Beyond the Music conference about how he hopes it will “galvanise” the music industry as issues affecting the industry fall on “deaf ears” at Westminster.Last month’s Beyond the Music explored multiple crises the music industry is currently facing, such as the future of grassroots venues and the continuing impact of Brexit on UK musicians struggling to tour Europe.On the latter, Burnham said “it’s just wrong” that the careers of young musicians are still suffering as they continue to face difficulties touring Europe post-Brexit.At the conference in October, Burnham discussed the “ridiculous” Brexit rules for artists travelling around Europe. Back in 2021, the UK music industry spoke out on how they had essentially been handed a “No Deal Brexit” when the government failed to negotiate visa-free travel and Europe-wide work permits for musicians and crew.Despite trying to raise these issues with ministers, Burnham told NME it’s still falling on “deaf ears” as the government continues to ignore the chaos Brexit has caused as artists struggle to navigate “all kinds of hidden obstacles” to performing in Europe.“It’s so frustrating, particularly given that Europe offered a better arrangement and in the rhetoric of Brexit, it got turned down,” he explained, referring to Boris Johnson’s rejection of a deal for artists proposed by Europe.

Check it out below.The new release sees the American rock band team up with the New Order member to deliver a cover of the thought-provoking ‘70s track ‘Solidarity’ – originally recorded by punk veterans Angelic Upstarts.When it was first recorded, the song was written in support of the anti-Communist Solidarity movement in 1980s Poland, and went on to be the band’s most famous hit.

Peter Hook & The Light have announced a huge 2024 world tour that will see the band play the ‘Substance’ albums from Joy Division and New Order in full – find dates and ticket information below.The New Order and Joy Division co-founder will be touring with his band from May next year, spanning New Zealand, Australia, North America, the UK and Ireland.The tour will open at the Opera House in Wellington, New Zealand on May 16, followed by eight more dates across New Zealand and Australia. From August 31, they’ll continue with a North American run that starts at History in Toronto, Canada.

New Order have announced a one-off show in Los Angeles, with Blossoms to support.The band will be performing at the 6,000-capacity YouTube Theater in the city on November 15, which is a warm-up show ahead of the band’s appearance at Darker Waves Festival in Huntington Beach on November 18. Ian Curtis mural in Manchester has been recreated in a new location, following the original being covered up last year.The original portrait of the Manchester music icon was located on the side of a house on Port Street since October 2020, however, outrage was sparked from Joy Division fans last August, when it was replaced with an Amazon Music advert, promoting Aitch’s debut ‘Close To Home’.Now, after promising fans that the mural would be arriving back in the city, a replacement has popped up in a new location. It comes after councillors granted listed building consent for the new artwork to be located on the side of a pub close to Piccadilly Railway Station.The new mural has been created by an artist named Akse P19, who added the finishing touches to the piece over the weekend.

New Order and Joy Division co-founder Peter Hook ran the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run this morning (May 21) in honour of The Smiths’ Andy Rourke.Rourke died earlier this week after “a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer”. He was 59.Speaking to BBC Sport after completing the Great Manchester Run, Hook told host Jeanette Kwakye that: “I lost a really good friend this week, Andy Rourke from The Smiths.

The Anchoress, aka Catherine Anne Davies, has spoken to NME about her new single – a cover of New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ – as well as her new album and upcoming Spring tour.Davies has shared a number of covers over the past year as part of ‘Bandcamp Friday’ – with her rendition of New Order’s 1986 the latest in a line of indie classics. She recently received kudos from collaborators Manic Street Preachers for her take on ‘This Is Yesterday’.“Whenever I’ve done covers, the criteria has always been: is this a great song, and is there something new or different I can bring to it?” Davies told NME, having already covered songs by the likes of The Cure, Depeche Mode and Blur.

New Order have announced details of a UK and European tour, with Confidence Man due to support – see full dates below.The new dates follow a run of shows in North America in March which included a performance and in conversation key-note speech with the band at the SXSW Festival.The band also performed earlier in the same week as part of Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater.New Order will begin their upcoming tour on September 21 at Copenhagen Royal Arena, before heading to Amsterdam, Paris, London, Dublin and Glasgow. They finish up in Leeds at the First Direct Arena on October 7.Tickets for the tour will be on sale this Friday, April 14 at 9.30am.

New Order have backed the #LetTheMusicMove campaign against proposed changes to US visa rules that would impact touring artists.Last month saw the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announce that it was planning to raise touring visa fees for foreign acts by more than 250 per cent.The DHS said in its proposal that applications for a P visa, which is for acts arriving in the states to perform temporarily, would increase from the current rate of $460 (£375.23) to $1,615 (£1,317). Meanwhile, the longer-term O work visa would jump from $460 (£375.23) to $1,655 (£1,349).Numerous musicians have since spoken out against the plans, saying that it would be “a huge hardship to pay such high visa fees”.

Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert of New Order spoke today (March 15) at this year’s SXSW and discussed becoming musicians, the evolution of their sound and growing up in Manchester.The trio were keynote speakers at the annual tech and marketing festival, in conversation with Will Hodgkinson, rock and pop critic of The Times. Andy Burnham, Mayor of Manchester, introduced the keynote, calling New Order “the ultimate Manchester band” before adding that it was “a big statement”.The band kicked off their chat by discussing how they weren’t necessarily “anti-musicians” but they were “anti-success”, with Sumner pointing to growing up working class before “punk came along” giving him the chance to express himself, without being a virtuoso. “I didn’t want to be famous, I didn’t care about that at all.

Mella Dee has released his newest single ‘Riptide’, featuring New Order and Joy Division’s Bernard Sumner.Released on Friday (March 10) via Pete Tong‘s Three Six Zero Recordings, The track harkens back to the ’70s styles of Italo-disco to invoke nostalgia.Mella Dee said ‘Riptide’ “was originally written in a time when we weren’t able to celebrate life together”, referring to the recent worldwide lockdown in 2020.He continued: “It was a release from the pressure of everything around us. Bernard wrote and recorded the vocals and managed to bring a new life to the record.”The Doncaster producer said that Sumner had added “a deeper meaning” to the track that resonated with “the feeling of being caught up in a riptide with the world still moving around you”.The track is Dee’s second solo release of 2023 after sharing ‘Find Love Yourself’ in January.Last year, Mella Dee released his ‘Whistle Posse Spangled Corner’ EP, which featured NME 100 alum Infinite Coles on the titular track ‘Whistle Posse’.

Primavera Sound Festival has announced its final headliner for its 2023 line-up – New Order.The 2023 instalment of the festival, which will take place in both Barcelona and Madrid, will see the Manchester legends perform at the former’s Parc del Fòrum on June 1 and at the and at the latter’s Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey on June 8.They join previously announced headliners Depeche Mode, Blur, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía along with the likes of Halsey, FKA twigs, Skrillex, St.

Tegan And Sara have shared the latest taste of their forthcoming tenth studio album ‘Crybaby’ in the form of a punchy new single titled ‘I Can’t Grow Up’.Described by the band as a “snotty nosed pop song about not being able to grow out of bad habits in relationships,” it comes with playful visuals which you can see below.The band’s Sara Quin said the track inspired musically by Chicago band Dehd and their 2020 album ‘Flower of Devotion’.She said: “The song started on bass, an instrument I’d never written with until Crybaby, and I was channeling a little bit of Emily Kempf from Dehd, and Peter Hook from New Order. My partner had traveled back to the U.S., after a year of being stuck in Canada during the pandemic, and I was enjoying late nights alone writing music and singing full tilt in the basement.”The track will appear on the Canadian duo’s 10th studio album ‘Crybaby’, which is due for release on October 21 via Mom + Pop Music.
