Conor McPherson, the five-time Tony nominee behind the plays Girl From the North Country and The Seafarer, has been set to adapt into a straight play the first novel and film of Suzanne Collins‘ trilogy The Hunger Games. It will mark the franchise’s first-ever live stage adaptation, and a fall 2024 debut in London is planned.

Nadine Shah will appear in a new production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ when it opens at the new Shakespeare North Playhouse venue in Prescot, Merseyside next month.The musician’s official Twitter account declared on Friday that: “This autumn, Nadine will be making her acting debut in a production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ directed by the incredible Matthew Dunster. A character we might have initially believed to be the center of the story is done away with, dispatched by one the executioners who give Hangmen its title. Only slightly less startling: That doomed character will, in fact, be the story’s center, both by his subsequent absence and by the questions left hanging with him: Was he guilty of the murder that brought him to the gallows? And does murder ever justify murder?

Marilyn Stasio Theater CriticIn the theatrical annals of wild and wicked stage plays, there are black comedies, blacker comedies, and blacker-than-the-dead-of-night comedies like “Hangmen.“  Prolific playwright Martin McDonagh hasn’t written all of them, to be sure; but he’s created some of the best of this deadly lot, including “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” “The Cripple of Inishmaan” and “The Pillowman,” not to mention such beautifully bleak films as “Seven Psychopaths,” “In Bruges” and “Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.”Still, there is something special about “Hangmen,” which, were it a song, would be the perfect little ditty to play as you were cutting your wrists. Happily (if such a word would apply to any of his work), this Broadway production is a deadly beauty, flawlessly cast and directed in the mordant style of an executioner’s song by Matthew Dunster.

Sneaky, menacing and funny are descriptions that come up more than once in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, but not one of the three words quite does justice to this irresistibly pitch-black comedy, opening tonight at the Golden Theatre on Broadway.
