Metallica honour “fearless” Marianne Faithfull
Metallica have paid their respects to Marianne Faithfull, following news of her death at age 78.The iconic singer and actor’s representatives announced that she had “passed away peacefully in London” yesterday (January 30), “in the company of her loving family.” A number of other artists and admirers shared tributes to Faithfull, a range of which you can find here. Mick Jagger also shared a personal tribute to his former partner.Now, Metallica have taken to Instagram to share an assortment of photos of various members with Faithfull, along with a message from drummer Lars Ulrich.“Thank you, Marianne… For the good times, For your kindness, For the great stories, For your fearlessness … And the biggest Thank You and Fuck Yeah for your incredible and unique contribution to our music, and for always being so willing to join us in performing it … and partake in the ensuing shenanigans! Fans can bid for a dinner date with Metallica’s James Hetfield at charity auction – but the winner will have to foot the bill
Adaptive Sports Foundation – a 501(c)(3) non-profit that looks to make athletics more accessible to those with physical and cognitive disabilities and chronic illnesses – the auction is giving one fan the chance to have dinner with the Metallica frontman.According to the page, the dinner will have to take place in Edwards, Colorado, which isn’t far from the vocalist’s home in Vail, and the date of the dinner must be scheduled within three months of the end of the auction.The winner will also be allowed to bring up to three additional guests for the night, however, the rules also stipulate that the winner of the auction will have to foot the entire bill for the night.Travel and accommodation aren’t included in the package and the whole thing is expected to be wrapped up within two hours, that being said, the winner is allowed to take a photo with the metal legend and can bring along something small to be signed.The auction is open until next Wednesday (August 21) and at time of writing the bid stands at $28,500 (£22,112). Metallica announce winners of ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ marching band competition
Metallica have announced the official winners of their first ever ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ marching band competition.The band launched the contest last April, with over 450 US colleges and high schools applying to enter.Bands were challenges to create “their most exciting, unique and impressive performances of some of the band’s most beloved songs”, with the band supplying them with musical charts of songs including ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Master of Puppets’, ‘Fade to Black’ and others.The band chose the winners themselves in a number of categories, based on the school age groups. The biggest winners, in the College (Division 1) category, were Auburn University in Alabama, who will receive $75,000 (£58,800) worth of musical instruments and gear for their school.Other winners include Eastern New Mexico University, Dobyns-Bennett High School in Tennessee, Boerne High School in Texas, Malverne High School in New York and Oakton High School in Virginia.Check out footage of Auburn University’s prize-winning halftime Metallica marching band show above.Earlier this month, the band’s frontman James Hetfield said that he would love somebody to create a microphone with a built-in straw.Speaking on the band’s in-house podcast The Metallica Report, he said: “Being able to maybe sip some water while I’m playing, you know, some kind of straw on the microphone…that could be cool.”Metallica will hit the road again in May 2024 for another leg of their M72 World Tour, for which they’ll play two nights in each city with two unique “no repeats” setlist and different support acts.
