Radio X reports, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) found that the popularity of the format had increased for 10 consecutive years. The sales of cassettes, however, remain much lower than those of vinyl records.The total number of cassette tape sales has risen from 3,823 in 2012 to more than 195,000 in 2022.It is said that the spike has been driven by recent releases from major acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Harry Styles and Florence + the Machine.Per the BPI, all 20 of last year’s biggest-selling cassettes were released in 2022.Mark Burgess, Founder of Flashback Records in north London, told Sky News that cassette sales had “shot up” at his shop post-pandemic.He said the old-school format appealed to younger music fans in particular due to its “collectability”.“Because cassettes are a smaller format, it’s easier to set up a collection,” he explained.

Metallica have responded to the recent revelation that Bob Dylan has seen the band perform live twice.Last December, the legendary singer-songwriter recalled in a rare interview with the Wall Street Journal that he has attended two Metallica concerts previously, as well as gigs by Oasis and Klaxons.Speaking to NME this week, drummer Lars Ulrich said: “I saw that.”He continued: “I don’t know if Bob reads the NME or not, but I have one thing to say to him: ‘Bob, you’re welcome at any Metallica show anywhere in the world at any time – but please come backstage and say hello. Albert Hammond Jr has spoken to NME about his new hip-hop-inspired single ‘100-99’, his upcoming solo album ‘Melodies On Hiatus’, working with Arctic Monkeys‘ Matt Helders, and progress on The Strokes’ next record.The guitarist and singer-songwriter shared his latest solo track earlier this week (April 4) and announced details of the new record – which will be his fifth solo album and the follow-up to 2018’s ‘Francis Trouble’.The LP’s first single finds Hammond Jr combining a beat inspired by ‘90s hip-hop and a glacial guitar melody as he sings: “I’m not safe / I’ve made mistakes, I would again / In spite of what it cost me.” It’s a merging of styles that he has wanted to try out for some years.“I’d write riffs and think, ‘I can imagine that looped with a beat and someone rapping over it’,” he told NME. “This song just happened to work [like that].

James Ford has recalled his time working with Arctic Monkeys – explaining that he still tries to push the frontman out of his comfort zone.Ford was talking in a new interview when he provided insight into his time in the industry, namely, his time working alongside iconic Sheffield-band, Arctic Monkeys.Working with the indie four-piece since 2007 – when he joined them during the production process for their second album, ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ – Ford explained how his relationship with the members has developed, and how he consistently pushes frontman Alex Turner to venture into new territory.“I’ve known them so long now. Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses have been announced as Glastonbury’s final two headliners for this year’s festival. The two acts will join Sir Elton John at the top of the bill for 2023, the festival has announced. The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has spoken to NME about his group being “post-Arctic Monkeys” – and how they could “still be the most important band” of the decade ahead.Speaking to NME for this week’s Big Read cover story to mark the release of their fifth album, ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’, Healy discussed the legacy and future of The 1975, as well as how he feels about being labelled as a ‘band’.Speaking in 2018, Healy hailed Arctic Monkeys as “the band of the 2000s” with The 1975 the defining band of the 2010s. Asked today about how he felt about his group’s standing for the decade ahead, Healy replied: “I think we could still be the most important band of the ‘20s, – I’ve got a prediction that we will be, but we’re starting to get into a semantic argument”.Healy then admitted that “Arctic Monkeys are still relevant and making amazing records and are still a band” who could “always be around if they wanted to” (as well as revealing that he’s “obsessed with bands like Fontaines D.C.”), but argued that culture is no longer necessarily aligned with the idea of “white guys with guitars changing the world” and that The 1975 shouldn’t perhaps even be considered as a traditional band.“With us, you need to take us out of the ‘bands’ world and put us next to Lana [Del Rey], Taylor [Swift], Frank Ocean and Kendrick [Lamar],” he said.
