Orkney rallied together to rescue a stranded orca from a beach near Tres Ness in what is believed to have been the first successful mission of its kind in the UK.
The animal was spotted this morning, Monday January 4, by residents Colin and Heather Headworth who quickly called the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).The rescue was an extremely rare occurrence with stranded orca being an unusual sight.
The organisation say they believe it is the first successful refloat of an Orca by BDMLR in the UK. Local area coordinator Emma Neave-Webb alerted a small team who attended at Bay of Newark where the animal was spotted.Residents originally thought it was a dolphin however when medics approached they discovered the orca who was in good.
