Police were forced to break up a string of illegal New Year's Eve parties as revellers broke lockdown rules. And angry officers accused people flouting rules of thinking that "partying was more important than lives".

Two illegal raves in East London were among several parties shut down by police. Essex Police made five arrests and dished out more than £18,000 in fines and fixed penalty notices to the organisers of illicit events overnight.

The organiser of a party in Hyndburn, Lancashire, where 80 young people gathered to bring in the new year, has been reported for a £10,000 fine.

More than 70 people were fined by police after they were found at an illegal New Year's Eve party in Sheffield.
