New travel restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the Omicron covid variant are a case of 'shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted', an expert has said.

Travellers heading to the UK will now have to take a Covid test before their departure in an effort to limit spread of the virus, the government said on Saturday.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the tightened requirements would come into force from 4am on Tuesday. But Professor Mark Woolhouse, member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, said the measures were 'too late' to make a 'material difference' to a potential wave of Omicron cases.
