When dramatist Alan Bennett brought us the first Talking Heads monologues in 1988, viewers loved the moving, funny films featuring Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Thora Hird and others favourites.
Recurring themes included death, illness and isolation. So perhaps it’s not surprising that, when theatres shut down and filming stopped in March, the BBC asked director – and Bennett collaborator – Sir Nicholas Hytner if he thought they could remake Talking Heads, with minimal crew, on the abandoned EastEnders sets.
