Netflix could slash its subscription prices in half if it goes ahead with suggested plans to introduce ads to the service. After the streaming giant lost hundreds of thousands of subscribers, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told investors that his firm "is quite open to offering even lower prices with advertising, as a consumer choice", and plans to trial an ad-supported cheap tier in the next year or two. Now, speculation is rife about how much the new 'cheap plan' will cost, as well as how many ads viewers will be forced to put up with while they watch their favourite shows and movies.

Media analyst Michael Pachter told the Sun he believes a half-price fee is on the way: "Most services that offer ad support charge half, so $7.99 is likely,"But Netflix may advertise a tad less and charge a tad more, so I would guess between $7.99 to $9.99 with four 2 minute ad breaks - one pre-roll, and three more at the 12, 24, 36 minute marks."In the UK, the price of a standard Netflix subscription is £10.99 per month.

So, if the analyst is correct and Netflix offers half price streaming with ads, subscribers could nab their bingewatch fix for as little as £5.49.

Another analyst, Tammy Parker from GlobalData, said she believes Netflix would cut prices by around $5 (£3.88) in the USA."HBO Max offers a $5 monthly discount for its ad-supported version, so I would imagine that Netflix would follow suit with that type of discount if it goes forward with an advertising-supported tier," she told The Sun.
