An asteroid measuring 110-230 metres wide has been spotted close to Earth, NASA’s Centre for near-Earth objects has confirmed.
The asteroid has been identified as 2020 HW3 and is believed to be rocketing through the solar system at an average speed of almost 62,500 mph.
It is estimated to be up to 750ft wide or 250 metres – the same height as London's Canary Wharf tower – and is classified as an Apollo asteroid which fly close to the planet and intersect its orbit.
Giant space rocks which don't enter Earth's orbit are classified as Amor asteroids. The huge object is one of three asteroids which will pass Earth on Friday 24th April and the first of six in the coming week.
