Asian "murder" hornets have claimed their first victim in Spain after a man was stung in the eyebrow by one of the deadly insects, it has been reported.
Originally from south-east Asia, the hornets were first introduced to Europe by accident when they arrived in France in 2003 in boxes of pottery and they have made their way to the UK, with the first recorded case in 2016.
The hornets can kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, their native country, because they are able to inject a larger amount of venom than most stinging insects.
The man, 54, from Santiago in northwest Spain’s Galicia region, is said to have been a keen beekeeper but discovered a nest of giant Asian hornets next to the hives he was looking after near his home.
